Maryland was the first, and Illinois the second to pass a law prohibiting employers from requiring or requesting that job candidates or employees turn over their social media account passwords. According to the author, the Colorado law differs from other states' laws as it contains additional exemptions to the ban and the penalty provisions are somewhat weaker than the other nine states' laws.
